01

Plan aftercare before you travel

Aftercare should be part of the treatment decision, not something arranged after the procedure. Before booking, ask the treating provider which checks must happen in Turkey, which can be done remotely and which may need a clinician at home.

02

Who is clinically responsible after discharge

Get the name or role of the clinical team responsible after discharge, a contact route during and outside normal hours, and a clear escalation pathway. A coordinator can help communication and logistics, but clinical advice, diagnosis and treatment decisions must come from qualified healthcare professionals.

03

What follow-up may be needed

Depending on the procedure, follow-up can involve wound review, dressing changes, blood tests, imaging, dental checks, eye pressure or visual checks, rehabilitation, medication review, device programming or pathology results. Ask what applies to your treatment and on which dates.

04

Plan for the handover home

Take a discharge summary, procedure report, relevant imaging or test results, medication list, implant or device identifiers where applicable, and contact details for the treating team. If local follow-up may be needed, identify the relevant specialty before travelling.

05

Know the warning signs

Ask the treating clinician which symptoms are expected and which require same-day or emergency assessment. Do not rely on a coordinator or general online article to decide whether a new symptom is safe.

06

Travel timing

The treating team should confirm whether you are clinically fit to travel. Consider mobility, pain control, wound care, hydration, risk of blood clots, medication timing and access to urgent care during the journey.

07

Questions before booking

  • Which follow-up checks must happen before I leave Turkey?
  • What can be managed remotely and what needs an in-person clinician?
  • Who do I contact if symptoms change at night or on a weekend?
  • What documents will I receive at discharge?
  • What should a doctor at home know about the procedure?
  • Who is responsible for reviewing test or pathology results that return after I travel?
08

Useful official sources

For general surgery and consent questions, consult national health-service or specialist-society patient information. For treatment in Turkey, verify that the healthcare facility or intermediary is appropriately authorised for international health tourism. Individual aftercare instructions from the treating team take priority over general information.

Next step

Move from reading to a structured enquiry.

Tell us what treatment you are considering and what still needs clarification. We organise the practical next steps and provider communication; the treating provider remains responsible for assessment and treatment.
